I realize now that when I get this card, for me it is referring to my AA meetings where the steps include a "fearless and searching moral inventory" of self to lead to spiritual awakening. All the Swords people have that, but the King is even rational about that. He can be a real asshole sometimes (IMO), true...but he's the one I often go to for assessments that are fearlessly honest. This particular guy has the hard Sword edges softened a bit by some prominanet watery elements in his natal horoscope chart.
