Dedicating this wonderful, soulful song by Florence and The Machine, "Shake It Out" to all of us for this new year. It keeps replaying in my head. I feel it has significant messages to forgive oneself, to allow new experiences, to embrace life without fear of making mistakes, to go ahead and make mistakes, to let the old and useless go, and let life happen. Let's not carry all the weight of yesterday into this new year. Shake it out. Let it go. Maybe that message is just for me, but somehow I doubt it. I think many of us "carry that horse around."
I couldn't help but notice many Tarot references in this song as well. How many can you find?
Regrets collect like old friends
Here to relive your darkest moments
I can see no way, I can see no way
And all of the ghouls come out to play
And every demon wants his pound of flesh
But I like to keep some things to myself
I like to keep my issues drawn
It's always darkest before the dawn
And I've been a fool and I've been blind
I can never leave the past behind
I can see no way, I can see no way
I'm always dragging that horse around
Our love is pastured, such a mournful sound
Tonight I'm gonna bury that horse in the ground
So I like to keep my issues drawn
But it's always darkest before the dawn
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out,
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out,
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off
I am done with my graceless heart
So tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart
Cause I like to keep my issues drawn
It's always darkest before the dawn
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out,
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out,
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off,
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off
And given half the chance would I take any of it back
It's a fine romance but its left me so undone
It's always darkest before the dawn
And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope
It's a shot in the dark and right at my throat
Cause looking for heaven, found the devil in me
Looking for heaven, found the devil in me
Well what the hell I'm gonna let it happen to me
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out,
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out,
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off

Such a great song, filled with insight and inspiration....perfect for beginning the new year! Thanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteThis song must have been written for me. Thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteHi Jinny.
ReplyDeleteIt is a nice song. One I did not know.
If I should sum it up with cards and not in a particular order I would say
5 of cups, 8 of swords, Devil, 2 of swords, Fool, 4 of pentacles,Star, Tower, Death, World and Hanged Man.
The damned if I do and damned if I don't draws a blank. What card would you use?
Anna
Thank you so much for sharing your massive amounts of tarot knowledge with the world! I am new to tarot, and this blog is a great resource for me.
ReplyDeleteI am studying 8 of Cups at the moment and I can't help seeing a connection to the song - becoming weary of a burden, recognizing a need for change, and finally taking steps in a new direction. Actually now that I think of it, there are some pretty strong connections with 8 of Cups to both the Fool and Devil cards. It seems like it can be a transition out of a "Devil" place into a "Fool" position, if that makes any sense?
To me -- and it's going to be different for you -- so here's my associations:
ReplyDelete"Regrets like old friends..." -- 5 of Cups
"I can see no way..." 2 of Swords
"all of the ghouls come out to play..." The Moon
"I like to keep some things to myself...I like to keep my issues drawn" High Priestess
"It's always darkest before the dawn." 10 of Swords
"I've been a fool_ -- obviously The Fool
"I can never leave the past behind" 3 of Cups
"Tonight I'm gonna bury that horse in the ground" 10 of Swords
"Shake it out" -- Judgement/The World
"done with my graceless heart, gonna cut it out and then restart" 3 of Swords/8 of Cups
"If I had the chance would I take any of it back..." 7 of Pentacles
"Damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't" 5 of Swords
"Drinks in the dark at the end of my road" The Star
"Ready to suffer and ready to hope" Knight of Cups
"Shot in the dark and right at my throat" Knight of Swords
"Cause looking for heaven, found the devil in me," The Devil
"What the hell, I'm gonna let it happen to me" The Fool/The Sun/The World
There are more, and some of the lines would be more suited to combinations of two or more cards, but just associating the cards to these wonderful lyrics really helps see them in a different light. I love doing this, putting cards to songs like this, because it brings those cards right down to real life and what we are experiencing right now.
Those are great lyrics. Thank you for sharing this, Ginny.
ReplyDeleteWell done Ginny!
ReplyDelete"all of the ghouls come out to play..." The Moon
"I like to keep some things to myself...I like to keep my issues drawn" High Priestess
"It's always darkest before the dawn." 10 of Swords
Wonderful selections. The one of the Moon makes perfect sense to me, yet I didn't think about it.
The one that escapes me is the 3 of cups. I see it as such a happy card.
Thanks again. I love reading your blog.
Anna
Did I say 3 of Cups? I meant SIX of Cups. I can never leave the past behind, always reliving the past. Good and bad.
ReplyDeleteHi, just wanted to say that this song http://youtu.be/2EIeUlvHAiM also by the same band, totally speaks about The Moon card. Like someone falls in love and you get The Moon as his feelings for you. :)
